I turn 40 today: Here are my 12 Rules for Life
I'm celebrating and reflecting because I turn 40 this Thursday. What an honour: Every day above ground is a great day.
I find that milestones in your life are a good moment to run a stocktake, so I recorded a solo episode this week: Leanneās 12 Rules for Life
Disclaimer: I'm not an Olympic gold medalist. I haven't climbed Everest. I just enjoy treating life as an experiment!
Here are a sneak peak of Leanneās 12 Rules for Life:
Weāre all gonna die: A reminder of our impermanence.
If you're feeling like a fish out of water, find a new pond: Adaptability is key.
Shake hands with your heroes, they probably have sweaty palms, too: Weāre all human at the end of the day.
There is no glass ceiling: Limitations are often self-imposed.
Your clicking reveals your calling: Listen to what resonates with you.
Live regionally, work globally: Embrace the vast opportunities the world offers.
Be like Tom Cruise in the moments that matter: Show up and give it your best.
Find the pattern interrupter in your life: Break monotonies and spark creativity.
If you donāt have permission, get permission: Advocate for your own desires and goals.
Share your work in public: Be open and transparent in your endeavours.
Double click everyday moments: Find depth in daily occurrences.
Real wealth is discretionary time (Alan Weiss): Time is our most valuable resource.
Are you approaching a watershed moment in your life, whether it's a milestone, you've had a significant life change? It might be nice for you create your own 12 rules! How do you like to see the world? What do you think? Do any of these rules resonate with you? Let me know!
The Trust Trap: Reflections on my global masterclass for over 1000+ leaders in Oil and Gas
Thereās a scene in the Disney movie Aladdin, where the genie turns to Aladdin and says there are three conditions on his wishes.
Rule #2: I canāt make anybody fall in love with anybody else.
The same rule applies when trying to build trust between employees in organisations.
There is an almost obsession in business to try to get people to trust each other. But trust, if you think about it, is conditional.
When we speak of trust, we are referring to something that comes with a set conditions.Ā
In English, it is referred to as credit.Ā For example, if you want to borrow money from a bank, you have to have some type of security.
The bank calculates the amount of your loan based on the value of the security, and says, āWe will lend you this muchā We will lend it to you on the condition that you will pay it backā.
Trust is transactional and based on a set of conditions: earn it, rebuild it, lose it.
I donāt think itās about trust at all.
Instead, I invited leaders across this organisation to consider two radical questions:
What would happen if I had unconditional confidence in others?
What would happen if all employees at your organisation had unconditional confidence in each other, and your clients?
Thank you, Harcourts Academy
What I loved working with the team at Harcourts was seeing their People First approach to crafting the finest experience come to life.
It's fun what you can cover in the space of a couple of hours, and the wonderful conversations and reframes that occur.
Here are some key themes that emerged from our work together
Begin with the experience in mind
The power of the GPS is that it cuts out 95% of the map... what information and content can you cull
Go on a listening tour! Find out what your group needs and avoid making assumptions
At the beginning of your experience, set the tone by powering-up the group through low-friction approaches
