Leanne Hughes' Private Roster newsletter: November 2022
š Youāll hear from me on the first day of every month, sharing new insights or value, to help release the power of your people. This newsletter is provided exclusively for past and current clients of Leanne Hughes. This list and your name will never be made available to anyone else, not even to others on the list.
Thereās nothing like the week-long runway to an overseas holiday, right? Iām off to the UK and Philippines on Sunday, and while Iāve been trying to cram five weeks worth of work into one, Iāve also been reflecting on the travel industry post-pandemic.
Usually, I love organising my own flights. Iād say itās a hobby of mine: Comparing aircraft, stopovers, in-flight service, plane configurations and points optimisation before making a decision on how weāll get there.Ā
However, on a recent trip to Hawaii I lost hours on the phone to Qantas, so I decided to engage a travel agent for this trip. If anything goes wrong with travel plans, I know sheāll sort it out quickly (I share more about this decision on an interview I did for the Unplug in Paradise podcast: Sparking Change In An Outdated Industry & The Key To Enhancing Your Client Interactions).
In 2020, the second busiest airport in Australia was Moranbah airport in Central Queensland. I flew there every week for a coaching assignment, with two airlines providing vastly different experiences:
Alliance Airlines: āDue to Covid restrictions, we wonāt be able to serve food on the aircraft. We hope you enjoy the complimentary water serviceā¦ā
Hevilift: āWould you like a hot tea, coffee, or soft drink?ā *Cabin crew walk through the plane, with a snack platter, offering a variety of muesli bars, chocolate bars and packets of chips*
Cost-cutting is fine and sometimes a necessary part of keeping afloat. However, using the pandemic as an excuse to drop your in-flight standards does not inspire customer loyalty. Alliance, I would have preferred a more upfront message about my complimentary water!Ā
A tale of two airports:
Londonās Heathrow airport is restricting the amount of travel in and out because it canāt cope with the surge in demand. Youāve probably also seen the viral photos of lost luggageā¦
Singaporeās Changi airport has no domestic travel and was a ghost town for two years. They have not crumbled like others under the pressure of revenge travel. By the way, work has started on a fifth terminal at Changi Airport with a revised design that allows it to adjust capacity during a pandemic.
Disruption and rapid change are here to stay and require new solutions, innovations and ways of working.
When Changi airport was set to reopen, they didnāt reignite pre-pandemic flight schedules. Instead, Changi leaders held discussions with airline representatives to negotiate flight plans, moving flights to off-peak times to accommodate the surge in demand.
Jim Rohn says it best, āIt is not what happens that determines the major part of your future.Ā What happens, happens to us all.Ā It is what you do about what happens that counts."
How are you responding and anticipating whatās to come?
What does your business version of a metaphorical fifth terminal at Changi airport look like?
Here are some of my most-clicked resources from the last 30 days:
Imagine: You take on a leadership position in a new region. Thereās been a ton of change, engagement levels are very low, attrition rates are at 45%. This happened to John McKendry and in this conversation, we discuss how he accepted this challenge to see engagement scores soar across APAC and attrition rates drop to half the industry average.Ā John is a senior healthcare executive with over 20 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical, medtech, and healthtech industries. Listen to the podcast.
Video: How to get the best out of conferences (without burning yourself out): FOMO can hit you when you're at a conference, summit, or event. So, how do you manage getting all there is out of attending, without burning out?
Client highlights from the last 30 days
I partnered with bright people from a state government department, providing recommendations on how they could reimagine their leadership programs. Iām delighted by their progress on taking these considerations on, and the incredible knock-on effect it will have for their people and culture across the state.
Iām working with an international NFP on navigating how they can balance indoctrinating employees into their corporate culture, while also allowing cultural and local nuances to thrive as well.
I recently delivered a masterclass based on a 2-Hour Workshop Blueprint I created to help subject matter experts create an interactive workshop experience. Itās a plug and play guide that you/they can use anytime to deliver an engaging session.
This isnāt a client highlight but it felt rewarding when I was inducted into Alan Weissā Million Dollar ConsultingĀ® Hall of Fame in October. Consultants in the Hall of Fame regarded by peers as being among the world leaders in consulting, as evidenced by empirical accomplishments in client results, professional contributions, and intellectual property.
